The Golden Light Sūtra states: 'Eighty-four thousand cities, hamlets, and settlements.' The Benevolent Kings Sūtra states: 'Sixteen great countries, five hundred middle countries, and one hundred thousand small countries.' The Śūraṅgama Sūtra states: 'In this Jambudvīpa, there are two thousand three hundred great countries.'
