Rituals for Lecturing and Repentance: The *Biographies of Eminent Monks* states: From the Han and Wei onwards, inviting monks and setting out offerings was identical to offering ancestral sacrifices; there was virtually no standard etiquette for rising and sitting. It was not until Master Dao'an of the Jin dynasty that, based on the sūtras and vinaya, rituals for answering invitations, praising, and so forth were first composed and established under three models: first, burning incense, determining seats, and ascending to lecture; second, the rites of repentance throughout the six intervals of the day; third, the procedures for Poṣadha and similar rites. Thereafter, Master Huiyuan further established regulations for the Dharma Society (the text exists in the *Collected Works of Mount Lu*). Vinaya Master Daoxuan of the Tang established the rites for dividing property among the five assemblies, the rites for vestments, the rites for taking refuge and revering, and the chapter on striking the bell. Vinaya Master Dazhao composed the tonsure ritual. All of these adapted to the times and adhered to the teachings to serve as norms (from the *Orthodox Lineage of the Buddhist Order*).
