Reforming Sacrifices: For the spirits of the wilderness, Hārītī, and others, the Buddha made them abandon blood-offerings and instead receive the portions of food set aside by the monastic assembly; this is the origin (both events are seen in Xiaoshi Zhi's Shishi tonglan, citing the canon in full). Emperor Wu of Liang and Emperor Xianwen of Wei decreed that sacrificial victims of flesh and blood should not be used in the state suburban temples, and that only vegetables and dough should be presented; this was sovereigns establishing regulation (these two events are seen in the Treatise on Prosperity and Decline). Master Zhizhe conferred the precepts upon King Guan, and Ciyun conferred the precepts upon the White Crane, in both cases having them abstain from pungents and blood and exclusively serve vegetarian food; this was śramaṇas establishing regulation (Ciyun composed a text on reforming sacrifices along with ten verses resolving doubts, citing comprehensive evidence).
