In the eighth year, the First Patriarch, Mahākāśyapa (translated as 'Great Light-Drinker'), having previously heard the Buddha preach the parable of the burning house in the assembly of the Lotus Sūtra, was among the four great śrāvakas who attained understanding from it. The Buddha bestowed a prophecy upon him that he would be named Light Buddha (this was a general entrustment of the Dharma). When nearing nirvāṇa, the Buddha addressed the great assembly: 'All the unsurpassed, correct Dharma that I now possess has been fully entrusted to Mahākāśyapa. He shall be a great refuge for you all' (see the specific entrustment of the Dharma; sustaining it in the final age requires this specific sense). The gold-threaded kāṣāya presented by [the Buddha's] maternal aunt was reserved to be handed over when Maitreya attains Buddhahood. Kāśyapa propagated and maintained [the Dharma] for twenty years, and then entrusted the treasury of the Dharma to Ānanda. He then took the Buddha's robe, went to Mount Kukkuṭapāda, and entered the samādhi of cessation, awaiting the advent of Maitreya (the aunt was Mahāprajāpatī, translated as 'Great Path of Love'; Kukkuṭapāda means 'Cock's Foot', where the three peaks of Vulture Peak resemble an upturned cock's foot).
