34.89

述曰。李斯勸秦。焚書阬儒。其為逆天道絕人理為甚矣。崔浩勸太武。廢佛焚其經阬其徒。此用秦舊法也。韓愈之言曰。人其人火其書。此用崔浩遺法。特不遇其君耳。雖空言無禍。使後世有人師用其語。豈不為盛德之累戒之哉。

The commentary says: Li Si urged Qin to burn the books and bury the scholars alive; his defiance of the Heavenly Way and extermination of human morality were extreme indeed! Cui Hao urged Taiwu to abolish Buddhism, burn its scriptures, and bury its followers alive; this was using Qin's old method. Han Yu's words said: 'Make men of their men, and burn their books.' This used Cui Hao's legacy method; he merely did not encounter such a ruler. Although his empty words brought no disaster, if someone in later generations should adopt and practice his words, would it not be an encumbrance upon glorious virtue? Let this be a warning!
