In the second year of the Zhengshi reign, which was the fourth year of the Chiwu reign of Wu, the Sogdian monk Kang Senghui came to the state of Wu. When people first saw him, they were all astonished and marveled at him. The Lord of Wu said, 'Is this a remnant trace of the divine spirit of the Buddha dreamed of by Emperor Ming of the Han?' He thereupon summoned and questioned him. Senghui said, 'More than a thousand years have passed since the Tathāgata entered transformation, yet his numinous bones and relics work wondrous responses without limit.' The Lord of Wu said, 'If relics can be obtained, I shall erect a stupa for them; if there is no proof, the state has its established punishments.' Senghui said to his disciples, 'The decline or flourishing of the Great Dharma hinges upon this single act. We must observe pure fasting to make an earnest quest.' After seven days without a sign, the period was extended to three times seven days; the assembly was growing fearful. Suddenly, there was a resonant clang. Looking into the vase, there were five-colored relics. The Lord of Wu himself took the vase and poured them onto a bronze platter, which immediately cracked and broke; neither burning with fire nor striking with a hammer damaged them in the least. Thereupon, he erected a stupa and established the Jianchu Monastery, naming the area the Buddha Quarter (Fotuo-li).
