35.64

嘉平二年。中天竺三藏曇摩迦羅。至洛陽譯僧祇戒。立大僧羯磨受戒。先是比丘出家。特剪髮而已。未有律儀。凡齋懺法事如祠祀狀。及迦羅至始出戒本。遂為日用。

In the second year of the Jiaping reign, the Central Indian Tripiṭaka master Dharmakāla came to Luoyang and translated the Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya (Sengqi jie). He instituted the karman ordination for fully ordained monks. Before this, when bhikṣus renounced household life, they merely cut their hair, without having vinaya etiquette; in all fasting, repentance, and ritual services, they resembled ancestral sacrifices. When Dharmakāla arrived, he first produced a prātimokṣa code, which then came into daily use.
