In the first year of Yongtai, Teng Tan'gong was five years old when his mother, Lady Yang, suffered from heat-illness and craved cold melon. It was not native to the local region of Yuzhang. Tan'gong searched everywhere, and suddenly met a monk who said, 'I have two melons, and give one to you,' then abruptly vanished. When his parents died, Tan'gong ate only vegetarian food for the rest of his life, weeping in grief day and night. Outside his gate stood two winter-growing trees, from which a divine radiance arose; suddenly an image of the Buddha with an retinue of attendants appeared, and his whole family bowed in worship together. After a long while it faded away. People of the time called him 'Teng Zengzi.'
