會稽太守孟顗事佛精懇。而為謝靈運所輕。嘗謂顗曰。得道應須慧業。丈夫生天當在靈運前。成佛必居靈運後。顗憾之。

Meng Yi, Grand Administrator of Kuaiji, served the Buddha with dedicated sincerity, but was held in light esteem by Xie Lingyun. Lingyun once said to Yi: 'Attaining the Way requires karmic roots of wisdom. As for gentlemen, your rebirth in heaven will surely precede mine, but your attainment of Buddhahood must lag behind Lingyun's.' Yi resented this.
