In the third year, the divine monk Beidu first emerged from Jizhou. He carried a wooden cup, and whenever crossing water he would invariably ride on it, hence he was called 'Cup Ferry' (Beidu). While traveling he carried a reed coop (the sound is *yuan*; making a coop out of reeds like a grain bin). The Li family of Guangling was feeding monks; Du placed his coop in the courtyard and sat on the mat. When he finished eating, he lifted his coop and called out, 'Four Heavenly Kings!' At that time a boy saw inside the coop four small children several inches tall, with eyebrows and eyes as if painted. When he pursued them, their whereabouts were already lost.
Also, the Western Tianzhu monk Īśvara came to Pengcheng to translate sūtras.
Also, Wang Zhongde, the Inspector of Xuzhou, made a sixteen-foot golden Buddha at Songwang Monastery; whenever there was banditry or disaster, the statue’s body would perspire.
