中大同元年。帝幸同泰寺講金字三慧般若經行清淨大舍。皇太子群臣以錢一億萬奉贖歸宮。是夜寺浮圖災。上曰。此魔所為也。乃詔曰。道高魔盛。行善障生。遂更起十二層浮圖。

In the first year of the Zhongdatong era, the Emperor visited Tongtai Monastery to lecture on the gold-lettered Three Wisdoms Prajñā Sūtra and performed the great pure renunciation. The Crown Prince and the ministers ransomed him back to the palace with one hundred million coins. That night, the monastery's stūpa caught fire. His Majesty said: 'This is the doing of Māra.' He then issued an edict saying: 'When the Way is high, Māra flourishes; when cultivating goodness, obstacles arise.' Thereupon he rebuilt a twelve-story stūpa.
