In the seventh year of the Taipingzhenjun reign era, the emperor and Cui Hao both put faith in and esteemed Kou Qianzhi. Hao repeatedly said to the emperor, 'The Buddhist Dharma is empty and fabricated; it should be entirely eradicated.' When the emperor campaigned against Gai Wu (Gai is pronounced ge) and reached Chang'an, he entered a Buddhist monastery. Monks offered wine to his retinue, and weapons were seen in their rooms. When this was reported to the emperor, he ordered the officials to investigate and execute the monks. When their property was examined, great quantities of brewing utensils were found, as well as goods deposited for safekeeping by local officials and wealthy people. Hao thereupon persuaded the emperor to execute all monks under heaven. An edict was issued to the garrison armies that wherever there were stūpas, images, or barbarian scriptures, all were to be burned and destroyed; monks, regardless of young or old, were all to be buried alive. The Crown Prince repeatedly remonstrated without being heeded; he then secretly ordered the edict to be promulgated slowly, so that those near and far might hear in advance and make their own plans. Many monks fled and hid, concealing the scriptures and images. Only the stūpas and temples were left with nothing remaining (jie is phonetic jilie, meaning single; Mencius says, 'There was not a single one left').
