38.31

延興二年。詔西天三藏吉迦夜譯雜寶藏經等五部。劉孝標筆受○上皇勅。自今祭天地宗社勿復用牲。唯薦以酒脯。歲活七萬五千牲命。

In the second year of the Yanxing reign era, an imperial edict ordered the Tripiṭaka Master of Western India, Kiṃkārya, to translate five texts, including the Saṃyuktaratnapiṭaka Sūtra; Liu Xiaobiao served as the amanuensis. The Retired Emperor decreed that henceforth, when sacrificing to Heaven, Earth, the Ancestral Temple, and the Altars of Soil and Grain, living sacrificial victims were no longer to be used, but offerings should be made only with wine and dried meat, thereby sparing the lives of seventy-five thousand sacrificial beasts each year.
