38.55

普泰元年。國子博士盧景祐通達佛法。人稱居士。帝亦待以不臣。從兄仲禮作亂累及景繫晉陽獄。景祐至心誦經。枷鎖自脫。帝聞其異貸出之。

In the first year of Putai, Lu Jingyou, Erudite of the National University, penetrated the Buddha-Dharma thoroughly, and people called him a lay practitioner (upāsaka). The Emperor also treated him without the protocol of a subject. When his paternal cousin Zhongli revolted, Lu was implicated and confined in the Jinyang prison. Jingyou chanted the scriptures with a focused mind, and his cangue and shackles came off by themselves. Hearing of this marvel, the Emperor pardoned and released him.
