The commentary says: This scripture consists of only ten phrases; it is indeed the text taught in a dream to Wang Xuanmo of the Liu Song dynasty. The text that Sun Jingde recited is what is now printed and circulated in the markets. Later people groundlessly added to it, rendering its text vulgar and disordered, which caused knowledgeable people to doubt its authenticity. Moreover, during the Jiayou era of our present dynasty, the wife of Academician Mei Zhi lost her sight and sent someone to pray at Upper Tianzhu. One night she dreamed of a white-robed person teaching her to recite the Ten-Phrase Avalokiteśvara Sūtra. She then recited it without ceasing, and both her eyes regained their sight. Lord Zhao Qingxian printed and propagated the account of this event. The Great Being, through this supremely concise scripture and method, rescues people from danger and hardship. Between ancient and modern times, there are three verifiable proofs that can be recorded. How could one not believe it?
