建德元年正月。帝幸玄都觀自升座講說。公卿僧道互為難問○時長安有李練者。神異不測。每夜於街上大哭釋迦牟尼佛。如此屢月。後二年果有廢釋之事。

In the first month of the first year of Jiande, the Emperor visited the Xuandu Abbey, mounted the seat himself, and delivered an exposition. The dukes, ministers, monks, and Daoists raised difficult objections against one another. At that time, there was a man named Li Lian in Chang'an whose spiritual anomalies were unpredictable. Every night, he would wail loudly on the streets, crying for Śākyamuni Buddha. This continued for many months. Two years later, the proscription of Buddhism indeed came to pass.
