二十一年。上得祕讖云。唐三世之後。女主武王代有天下。遂密召太史令李淳風訪其事。淳風曰。臣以術推之。其兆已成。今在陛下宮中逾三十年當有天下。上曰疑似者殺之。對曰。天命不可易。且真王者不死。徒使疑似之戮。淫及無辜。上遂止○詔左丘明．孟軻．穀梁．赤公羊．高伏勝．毛萇．高堂生．孔安國．戴聖．劉向．何休．鄭眾．馬融．盧植．鄭玄．服虔．杜子春．范寗．杜預．王肅．王弼。二十一人。皆從祀先聖廟廷。

In the twenty-first year, the Emperor obtained a secret prophecy saying: 'After three generations of the Tang, a female ruler, King Wu, will replace it and possess the realm.' He then secretly summoned the Grand Astrologer Li Chunfeng to inquire about the matter. Chunfeng said, 'When your servant calculates by the arts, the omens are already formed. She is currently in Your Majesty's palace, and after thirty years she will possess the realm.' The Emperor said, 'I shall kill those who fall under suspicion.' He replied, 'The heavenly mandate cannot be changed. Moreover, a true king does not die; you would only make suspected killings spread excessively to the innocent.' The Emperor thereupon stopped. An imperial decree ordered that twenty-one people—Zuo Qiuming, Meng Ke, Guliang Chi, Gongyang Gao, Fu Sheng, Mao Chang, Gaotang Sheng, Kong Anguo, Dai Sheng, Liu Xiang, He Xiu, Zheng Zhong, Ma Rong, Lu Zhi, Zheng Xuan, Fu Qian, Du Zichun, Fan Ning, Du Yu, Wang Su, and Wang Bi—be collectively worshipped as companions in the courtyard of the Former Sage's temple.
