In the fifth year, in the first month, an edict ordered monks, nuns, and Daoist priests to pay homage to their parents (Zhenguan zhengyao). An edict transformed the Qingshan Palace into Cide Monastery for Empress Dowager Mu. Puguang Monastery was founded for the Crown Prince Chengqian, and an edict appointed the monk Fachang to reside there and transmit the bodhisattva precepts to the Crown Prince. In the eleventh month, Chan Master Sengyong of Huadu Monastery passed away. His Majesty grieved with respect and bestowed silks, commanding the Junior Deputy Mentor of the Crown Prince, Li Baiyao, to compose the stele inscription, and additionally ordering Ouyang Xun to write the calligraphy (today some possess stone rubbings of it; the characters are fragmentary and incomplete, yet cherished as authentic). Earlier, Surūsh of Persia established the Manichaean Zoroastrian fire religion (xian: fire, yan-fan; a barbarian deity, namely a non-Buddhist brāhmaṇa). An edict decreed the establishment of a Daqin Monastery in the capital (the country of Persia is at the Western Sea, here called Daqin).
