Third year. An edict was issued that throughout the empire, no living beings were to be killed during the first, fifth, and ninth months, as well as on the six fasting days. Li Yuan, the Duke of Tang (Gaozu, who was first enfeoffed in Tang), donated his residence in Chang'an to the monk Tanchong, and the Emperor composed the name Qingchan Monastery for it. The monk Huiying of Hailing bowed to the three thousand Buddhas during the six periods of the day, delivering the people from the hardships of famine and suffering. One day, while he was expounding the Lotus Sūtra, a spirit with an entourage arrived, identifying himself as the Great Spirit of the Five Destinies, and requested to receive the precepts, saying that he was going on an inspection tour of the Eastern Sea. Ying prepared food for him and conferred the precepts upon him, whereupon he departed.
