4.38

八國舉兵爭求舍利。姓煙婆羅門高聲唱言。當作八分。時拘尸城得第一分。乃至闍王得第八分。各還本國起塔。姓煙婆羅門得盛舍利瓶。還那羅聚落起塔。羅延婆羅門得炭。還國起塔。是時閻浮提始有十塔（十誦律）。

The eight countries raised troops to fight for the relics. The brāhmaṇa named Dhūmra shouted loudly: 'They should be divided into eight portions.' At that time, the city of Kuśīnagara received the first portion, and so on, until King Ajātaśatru received the eighth portion. Each returned to his own country and erected a stūpa. The brāhmaṇa named Dhūmra received the urn that held the relics and returned to the village of Nāra to erect a stūpa. The brāhmaṇa Nārāyaṇa received the ashes and returned to his country to erect a stūpa. At that time, there were for the first time ten stūpas in Jambudvīpa (Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya).
