The monk Zilin was summoned into the forbidden palace to lecture on the sūtras, was granted purple robes, and made an attendant in attendance. Earlier, when the Master had returned from his travels of study to visit his parents, his mother had already been dead for three years. He proceeded to the shrine at Mount Tai, chanted the Lotus Sūtra, and vowed to see King Tianqi. The king manifested his form and said, 'During the Master's lifetime, his mother ate many chicken eggs and took their whites to apply to sores on her head. On this account, she is suffering punishment in hell.' Lin wailed in grief and begged for her release. The king said, 'Go to Mount Mao to pay homage to the Aśoka Stūpa; perhaps she may be pardoned.' Lin immediately went to the mountain temple and made an anguished plea, bowing until he reached forty thousand prostrations. He heard a voice in the air, looked up, and saw his deceased mother riding the clouds and mist, who thanked him saying, 'Relying upon your power, I have already attained birth in Trāyastriṃśa Heaven.' Today, the Cuiwei Hermitage on the peak behind the temple is the place where the Master dwelled.
Wang Wei, the Left Vice Director of the Department of State Affairs, and his younger brother Jin were both deeply devoted to the Buddha, wore plain clothes, and ate a vegetarian diet. Their villa was at Wangchuan, where he often wandered and composed poetry. When his mother passed away, he submitted a memorial requesting that the Wangchuan estate be converted into a Buddhist monastery.
