In the first year of Xingyuan, an imperial decree stated: 'The property of deceased monks and nuns originally belonged to the monastery; after collecting what was needed for funeral expenses, the remainder was distributed among the whole assembly. Lately, officials have seized it on various pretexts, causing disruption and harm. Now let this confiscation be completely halted, and let the three directors be instructed to follow entirely the methods for dividing property in the vinaya texts (the chapter on robe regulations in the Nanshan Shichao and the Protocol on the Relative Significance of the Five Deceased Assemblies record the rules for dividing property in detail).' Dharma Master Fazhao practiced the Five Assemblies in Bingzhou to teach people to recite the Buddha's name. In the central palace, the Emperor often heard the sound of Buddha-recitation from the northeast; he sent an envoy to trace it to Taiyuan, where he indeed witnessed the flourishing of the Master's proselytization. He then invited him into the forbidden palace to teach the palace ladies to recite the Buddha's name, also using the Five Assemblies.
