In the ninth year, auspicious clouds appeared over the Buddha's Relic Pagoda at Famen Temple on Mount Qi. In the fourth month, Hanlin Academician Li Xun requested that the ritual arena in the Changsheng Hall be abolished and that fraudulent and bogus monks and nuns be purged. That night, a great wind arose around the sacred images in the Imperial Palace; all four owl-tail ridge-end ornaments of the Hanyuan Hall were shaken loose and fell. It uprooted three trees in front of the hall and damaged several dozen Jinwu guardhouses, interior and exterior watchtowers, and city gates. The western walls of the Guanghua Gate were all ruined. The scholar-officials and commoners were terrified. Deeming that Li Xun's request had contravened Heaven's will, the Emperor urgently issued an edict halting the previous purge and reinstating the ceremonial images in the Imperial Palace; only then did the wind cease (Five Elements Treatise of the Old History). In the seventh month, Li Xun requested that monks and nuns throughout the realm be tested on their scriptural studies, and that those who failed to meet the standard be laicized. In the eleventh month, Li Xun was condemned for plotting to execute the eunuchs and was beheaded at Lake Kunming. An edict excused monks and nuns from taking the scriptural examination. In the eighth month, an imperial order summoned the Śramaṇa Zongmi (titled Guifeng, a collateral sixth-generation successor of the Sixth Patriarch) into the inner palace to inquire about the Buddha Dharma, bestowing upon him a purple square robe.
