In the third year, Chan Master Benji of Mount Cao in Fuzhou demonstrated his entry into quiescence. He was posthumously named Yuanzheng. The master had attained the Dharma under Dongshan; the world called it the Caodong lineage. The Monk "Shrimp" of the capital had personally received the mind-seal from Dongshan, and concealed his traces in Min. Daily along the riverbanks he gathered shrimps and clams for food, and at dusk he slept among the paper money at the White Horse Shrine. Chan Master Jing of Huayan entered the paper money at night to lie in wait for him. When the master arrived, Jing held him fast and asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The master replied, "The wine table before the spirit!" Jing bowed in gratitude and withdrew. Later, he entered the capital, feigning madness among the common people, his spiritual marvels unfathomable. Chan Master Wenyan of Yunmen in Shaozhou gathered a thousand disciples. Liu, the ruler of Han (with his capital at Guangzhou), summoned him into the palace to consult on the essentials of the Dharma, serving him with the etiquette due a teacher. The master attained the Dharma under Xuefeng and was called the Yunmen lineage (seventh generation under Qingyuan).
