In the first year of the Tianyou era, an imperial decree for the imperial birthday ordered the monasteries and abbeys throughout the empire to provide vegetarian feasts, and forbade slaughter and fishing among the populace. Lü Dongbin traveled to Mount Hua, where he met Zhongli Quan, who transmitted to him the golden elixir and the method of the sword. Later, passing through Mount Huanglong in Ezhou, he encountered Chan Master Ji ascending the hall (eighth generation under Qingyuan). Resolutely, he asked, "'A single grain of millet conceals the universe; / half a pint cauldron boils the mountains and streams.' What does this mean?" The master said, "You corpse-guarding ghost!" Dongbin said, "What of the fact that in my pouch is the elixir of immortality?" The master said, "Even if you pass through eighty thousand kalpas, in the end you will fall into emptiness and demise." Dongbin would not yield. That night, he flew his sword to threaten him. The master, knowing beforehand, covered his head with his Dharma robe and sat in the abbot's quarters. The sword circled several times; the master pointed his finger at it, and it fell to the ground. Dongbin came forward to apologize. The master questioned him, "Setting aside the boiling within the half-pint cauldron, what is the single grain of millet concealing the universe?" Dongbin suddenly experienced awakening, and composed a gāthā in gratitude, which went: "Ever since I once met Huanglong, / I only then realized that before, I applied my mind wrongly" (from Surviving Matters of the Immortals' Garden).
