In the second year, Liu, Prince of Wuyue, dispatched the Śramaṇa Qingwai together with his younger brother Qian Hua to Mount King Aśoka in Siming to escort the relic pagoda of Śākyamuni. The boat moored at Xiling; at night the pagoda emitted light so that the Zhejiang River was as bright as day. The Prince went in person to welcome it to Luohan Monastery and set out extensive offerings. The "Cloth Bag" Monk of Fenghua in Siming passed away while seated on a flat boulder under the eastern corridor of Yuelin Monastery, and was buried on Mount Feng. After he was buried, someone saw him again along the road in Dongyang, and the monk exhorted him, saying, "I mistakenly brought a single shoe with me; please carry it back." When the person returned, he learned that the master had died; the assembly examined his grave, and only a single shoe remained there. When the master first arrived, no one knew where he came from. He called himself Qici. He had a wrinkled forehead and a bulging belly; all his predictions of good and bad fortune proved true. He always carried a cloth bag on his staff and wandered through the marketplaces preaching and converting; whatever he saw, he would beg for it, and all he received went into his bag. A group of sixteen boys would noisily chase after him and vie to pull at his bag. At times, among people, he would open his bag and take out alms bowls, wooden clogs, fish, cooked rice, vegetables, meat, tiles, stones, and the like, scattering them down and saying, "Look, look!" Then he would pick them up one by one, saying, "What is this?" He would also wrap feces in paper, saying, "This is from Maitreya's Inner Court." Once he was standing on the road, and a monk asked him, "What are you doing?" The master said, "Waiting for someone to come." The monk said, "He has come!" The master took an orange from his bosom to give him; when the monk made to receive it, he withdrew his hand again and said, "You are not that person!" A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The master put down his cloth bag and stood with hands clasped. The monk said, "Is there nothing further?" The master hoisted the cloth bag over his shoulder and walked on. As a monk was walking ahead, the master patted him on the back; the monk turned his head, and the master said, "Give me one coin!" He once addressed the assembly at the latrine, saying, "What is collected from solicitations should not be used for these two matters of major and minor [defecation and urination]." Jiang Mohe, a man of the commandery, often spent time with him. One day they bathed together at Changting; Jiang saw an eye on the master's back and patted him, saying, "You are a Buddha." The master checked him, saying, "Do not tell anyone." The master frequently taught Jiang to recite the Mahāprajñāpāramitā, so the world called him Layman Mohe. Formerly, when the master traveled in Min, there was a Layman Chen who made offerings to him most diligently. He asked the master how old he was. The master replied, "This cloth bag of mine is as old as empty space." He also asked the reason, and the master said, "My surname is Li, born on the eighth day of the second month." Early in the Tianli era of the Jin, Wang Ren, Magistrate of Putian, saw him in Min, and the master left behind a gāthā: "Maitreya, the true Maitreya, / dividing his body into hundreds of thousands of koṭis; / manifesting from time to time to people of the time, / yet the people of the time do not recognize him." Later, someone beside his grave pagoda found a green-glazed pure water vessel and a six-ringed monk's staff, which were stored in the monastery.
