43.18

述曰。儒家有排佛者。以不曾讀佛經耳。使稍知觀覽必能服其為道之妙。李藹造論指佛為邪。蓋傅奕韓退之詆佛為夷之餘波也。不有明主孰能鑒其妄作。流之海島非不幸也。

The author remarks: When Confucians reject Buddhism, it is simply because they have never read Buddhist scriptures. Had they even slightly perused them, they would surely submit to the marvel of its Way. Li Ai composed a treatise branding the Buddha as heterodox, which was merely an afterwave of Fu Yi and Han Tuizhi reviling Buddhism as barbarian. Had there not been an enlightened ruler, who could have seen through his wild posturing? That he was merely exiled to an island in the sea was not unfortunate for him.
