五年。眉山蘇洵赴汴京舉進士不中。泝江至潯陽。登廬山謁祖印訥禪師問法（東坡云。慶歷丁亥。先君問法於圓通。訥公得其旨）。

In the fifth year [1045], Su Xun of Meishan traveled to the capital Bianjing to take the jinshi examination but failed. Sailing upstream on the river to Xunyang, he ascended Mount Lu to call upon Chan Master Zuyin Né to ask about the Dharma. (Dongpo said: "In the dinghai year of Qingli, my late father asked about the Dharma at Yuantong; Master Né grasped his underlying purpose.")
