In the second year of Zhiping, an imperial decree ordered the Great Xiangguo Monastery to erect a stele for the imperial eulogies on the Buddha's tooth from the three reigns. The minister Wang Gui, Hanlin Academician, composed the text. The minister Jia Changchao, Grand Master of the Left and Duke of the State of Wei, brushed the calligraphy. The minister Han Qi, Grand Master of the Right, concurrently Commissioner for Translating Sutras and Polishing Texts and Duke of the State of Wei, erected the stone. Taizong's imperial composition read: / 'Through kalpas accumulated, the work is done; the imprint's marks are neat. / Had it not been obtained at Nanshan, it would surely be hard to meet. / The eyes behold a layered gleam of lustrous golden tone; / The hands hold up a single chip of jade-light chilling cold. / Refined in hundreds of fires, its spirit pierces through; / Preserved a thousand years, its shining hues are true. / Cultivating the fruit of concentration is a secret truly deep; / With an upright mind, take care this is no common thing you keep.' / Zhenzong's imperial composition read: / 'The Great Sage of the Western Region is named Śākya; / Reaching out to beings and bestowing compassion, he is the World-Honoured One. / We ever vow that through progress and cultivation the wondrous fruit may grow, / In hopes that its bountiful benefit may rest upon the common people.' / Renzong's imperial composition: / 'The Three Sovereigns concealed their matter and all returned to earth; / The Five Emperors hid their forms and have already turned to dust. / Master Kong within this realm was praised as a sage; / Lord Lao in the world was also called the true. / Their buried corpses left behind only empty graves; / In what place could they show their bodies to later generations? / Only my Master's golden bone remains: / Having undergone a hundred refinings, its color is ever new.'
