In the fifth year, an imperial edict ordered Xiangguo Monastery to open its sixty-four cloisters into eight Chan and two Vinaya cloisters, designating the east and west corridors as the two great monasteries of Huilin and Zhihai. Chan Master Zongben of Jingci was summoned by imperial edict to reside at Huilin, and Chan Master Changzong of Donglin to reside at Zhihai. Changzong firmly declined, and his refusal was granted. Zongben entered the Yanhe Hall for an imperial audience. After the imperial salutation of long life, he immediately climbed onto the couch and sat cross-legged. The imperial guards looked on in shock, but the master remained completely at ease. Tea was bestowed, and he lifted the cup, swaying it back and forth. The Emperor asked where he had received his training. He replied, 'At Chengtian Yong'an' (the Yong'an Cloister of Chengtian Monastery in Gusu). The Emperor was greatly pleased, and they conversed for a long time. After he withdrew, the Emperor watched him and said, 'He is a treasure among monks.' An attendant asked what the Sovereign had discussed. He said, 'Just drinking tea and chatting idly.'
