In the fifth year, an imperial decree appointed Wenguo of Yunjian to reside at Lower Tianzhu Temple. An envoy from the inner palace was dispatched bearing imperial toilet articles and bestowing a statue of Amitāyus Buddha, for which a pavilion was built. They reverently installed the imperial calligraphy, which boldly inscribed its horizontal plaque so that it shone brilliant against the clouds and the Milky Way. At that time, the abbot's seat at Upper Tianzhu was vacant; the Metropolitan Prefect and Academician of the Duanming Hall, Zhao Yuquan, presented a petition stating that there was no one who could replace Wenguo, and an imperial decree approved it. That year there was a drought, and they invited the Mahāsattva Guanyin out to Mingqing Temple. The Master entered to offer thanks, and the imperial carriage visited the temple to pray. The words the Master addressed to the throne were concise and incisive, fitting well with the imperial mind. As the imperial carriage returned, rain fell. Thereupon he was immediately granted the title of Clerical Registrar of the Left Street and bestowed the title of Great Master Fohui.
