After the Nameless Achārya resided on this mountain, he said: 'Everything I seek is not outside. I will not move.' Lord Yang Yan of Hongnong, having been summoned from Daozhou as prime minister, passed by him; thinking that he should live in the capital, he urged him to go by force, but could not. He was about to submit a memorial about him, but [the Achārya] said: 'I wish to go after an interval of a year.' The next year, Yang was dismissed from his post as prime minister and banished to the South Sea, and in the end [the Achārya's] intention was fulfilled. Li E of Zhaojun was a man of eloquence and breadth; when he served in Yuezhou, full of pride, he wished to humble his Way, but upon hearing a single word he submitted and became his disciple. Pei Zangzhi of Hedong brought his entire clan to receive his teaching. The Mayor of the Capital, Lord Yang of Hongnong, offered his secluded land as a bodhimaṇḍa. Zhang Weijian, Prefect of Hezhou, purchased the western peak to expand his dwelling. Those who left goods and wealth beneath his hall could not be counted; when receiving them, he also said nothing. When he was about to pass away, he instructed his senior disciple Huaiyuan, conferring on him the marvelous secrets of the Way, but in the end did not disclose his surname. Some say he was a man of Zhou. Prefect Li of Xinzhou wrote a biography for him, Xie Chu of Changsha composed an account of his conduct, and Cui Xingjian of Boling composed an essay titled 'Guarding the Nature'. Those who used literary compositions to speak of the Achārya's merits and virtues cannot be enumerated. The Lord of Hongnong sent the account of conduct from Yuhang, and Master Huaiyuan brought the biography from Changsha, requesting me to compose the stele. Having already written its text, I have also made use of its reverse side to record this.
