5.10

（阿難旁出）末田地尊者。雪山五百仙人之導首也。阿難欲入涅槃至恒河中。其地大動。諸仙知之。飛空而至。俱求出家。阿難即化河水悉成金地。五百仙人俱得出家成阿羅漢（末田地。此翻為中。以諸仙在河中得戒也）時末田地欲先涅槃。阿難囑云。佛記汝當於罽賓國建立佛法。阿難涅槃後。末田地乃往罽賓。降伏惡龍住持佛法。臨涅槃時涌身虛空作十八變。然後入滅（付法藏經）。

(Collateral branch of Ānanda) The Venerable Madhyāntika was the leader of the five hundred ṛṣis of the Snow Mountains. When Ānanda wished to enter nirvāṇa, he reached the middle of the Ganges, and the earth shook violently. The ṛṣis, aware of this, flew through the air and arrived, all seeking to go forth from home. Ānanda then transformed the waters of the river entirely into golden ground. All five hundred ṛṣis were able to go forth from home and become arhats (Madhyāntika is translated as 'middle', because the ṛṣis received the precepts in the middle of the river). At that time Madhyāntika wished to enter nirvāṇa first. Ānanda instructed him, 'The Buddha prophesied that you shall establish the Buddha's Dharma in the kingdom of Kaśmīra.' After Ānanda entered nirvāṇa, Madhyāntika went to Kaśmīra, subdued the evil dragon, and upheld the Buddha's Dharma. When he was on the verge of nirvāṇa, he surged up into the air, displayed the eighteen transformations, and then entered extinction (Transmission of the Treasury of the Dharma).
