The twenty-third patriarch, the Venerable Āryasiṃha, was a native of Central India. Having attained the Dharma, he traveled to the kingdom of Jibin. There was a man named Bālika who originally practiced dhyāna-contemplation and possessed meditative knowledge and vision; clinging to marks and abandoning marks, he did not speak with the five assemblies. Āryasiṃha converted him, and the five assemblies all submitted; his fame was heard far and near. There were two non-Buddhists, Māmukta and Buluozhe, who had long practiced illusory arts; they stole into monastic robes, secretly entered the royal palace, and violated the queens and consorts, saying: 'If it fails, we will blame it on the sons of the Śākyan.' When the plot was exposed, the king was furious, saying: 'I have always respected the Three Jewels; why do the śramaṇas insult me so greatly?' He then destroyed monasteries and harmed monks. Holding a sword himself, he came to the Venerable One's place and asked: 'Has the master realized the emptiness of the aggregates?' He replied: 'Yes.' The king said: 'Since the aggregates are empty, you should give me your head.' He replied: 'The body is not mine; why should I begrudge my head?' The king then cut off the master's head. White milk gushed up several feet high. The king's arm immediately fell off, and he died within seven days. Crown Prince Guangshou lamented: 'Why did my father bring this calamity upon himself?' There was an immortal of Mount Elephant White who thoroughly understood cause and effect; he broadly explained the past causes for him, and they built a stūpa for the Venerable One's recompense-body (from the Fu fazang jing).
