唐肅宗至德初。宰相裴冤請鬻度牒。謂之香水錢○聽白衣誦經賜出身。或納錢百緡請牒剃度。

Tang Dynasty. Emperor Suzong: In the early Zhide era, Grand Councillor Pei Mian requested that ordination certificates be sold, calling it "incense water money." / Laypersons were permitted to recite sūtras to be granted entry into the clerical order, or they paid one hundred strings of cash to request a certificate for tonsure and ordination.
