Mount Ayuwang: In the time of Emperor Wu of the Jin, Liu Sahe reached Mount Mao to seek a relics pagoda, and first built a monastery; therefore it was called Mount Ayuwang. ○ Mount Taibai: Under Emperor Hui of the Jin, the monk Yixing built a hut in the mountains; Taibai transformed into a youth to attend upon him, so it was called Mount Tiantong Taibai. ○ Under Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang, the eminent monk Farui examined the ancient traces, established a monastery, and recited the *Lotus Sūtra*; Taibai transformed into a youth to deliver offerings, so he was called Chan Master Taibai, and the mountain was named Tiantong. ○ Mount Tianzhu: Under Emperor Cheng of the Jin, the monk Zhu Huili arrived at Mount Hulin (in the Tang, it was changed to Wulin to avoid a naming taboo) and said in astonishment, "From what year has this small peak of Vulture Peak in Central India flown here?" Therefore it was named Mount Tianzhu, Peak That Flew Here, Lingyin Monastery. ○ Mount Shicheng: Under Emperor Wu of the Qi, the monk Senghu chiseled the rock at Mount Shicheng in Shan County to create a Maitreya Buddha. Later, the monks Sengshu and Sengyou successively chiseled and completed it, reaching a height of one hundred and ten feet. A heavenly spirit told Vinaya Master Daoxuan that he was the later rebirth of Hu, Shu, and You; the world called it the Stone Buddha of Three Lifetimes. ○ Under Emperor Zhaozong of the Tang, the King of Wuyue built Ruixiang Monastery to venerate the stone statue. ○ Mount Luofu: Under Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang, an imperial decree declared Mount Luofu to be the dwelling place of Huashou Bodhisattva, and specially established Yanxiang Monastery. ○ Mount Wutai: The record says: The mountain has five peaks spanning five hundred li; the central terrace is forty li high. Above are stone images of Mañjuśrī and Maitreya; to the southeast is Qingliang Monastery, the dwelling place of Mañjuśrī (cited in the fifth year of the Taiping era of Song Taizong). Under Emperor Gaozong of the Tang, an imperial decree ordered the monk Huize to go to Mount Wutai; he saw golden light filling the hall and a voice in the sky saying, "Excellent!" ○ The Kaśmīran monk Buddhapāli reached Mount Wutai and encountered an old man, who instructed him to return to the western lands to bring back the *Uṣṇīṣa-vijayā-dhāraṇī* (and so forth). ○ Under Emperor Daizong, the monk Fazhao visited Mount Wutai and saw golden gates and multi-storied pavilions, where Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra sat on separate seats preaching the Dharma; he consequently built Zhulin Monastery. ○ Under Emperor Xianzong, Chan Master Wuzhuo entered Mount Wutai, saw an old mountain man leading an ox, and followed him into a monastery; he summoned the youth Jundī to bring forth tortoiseshell cups, and they drank curd together. ○ Under Emperor Muzong, Pei Du memorialized that Mañjuśrī appeared at Mount Wutai with ten thousand attendants. ○ Under Emperor Taizong of the Song, an imperial decree dispatched palace attendants to Mount Wutai to cast bronze-gilt statues of Mañjuśrī and ten thousand bodhisattvas, and renovated ten monasteries including Zhenrong and Huayan. ○ Mount Taihong: Under Emperor Wenzong of the Tang, Master Shanxin severed his foot and passed away; Zhang Wuling and his son stood in attendance and were also liberated and passed away; people called them the Great Sage and the Second Sage. ○ The gazetteer of Mount Emei says: In ancient times, Old Man Pu entered the mountain and saw the true manifestation of the Mahāsattva Samantabhadra; from this, the traces appeared. ○ Under Emperor Taizu of the Song, an imperial decree sent artisans to Mount Emei to adorn the Buddha statues, because Jiazhou had memorialized that Samantabhadra manifested his form. ○ Emperor Taizong decreed that a bronze-gilt statue of Samantabhadra be cast in Chengdu and placed at Baishui Monastery on Mount Emei. The Three Emeis tower above the Five Sacred Peaks, their elegance foremost in the Nine Provinces, being the number one mountain in Cīnasthāna. ○ Controller-General Wang Gun went to Emei and saw Mount Wawu all turn golden, with Samantabhadra in its midst. ○ An imperial decree sent a jeweled crown and kāṣāya to Samantabhadra Monastery on Mount Emei; the Mahāsattva was seen riding purple clouds traveling in the sky. ○ Mount Yandang: The large pool at the mountain summit is traditionally called Yandang (Wild Goose Pool); below are two pools called Longqiu (Dragon Cascades); it is the dwelling place of Venerable Nakula (seen in the beginning of the Xiangfu era of Zhenzong). ○ Mount Putuo: Under Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang. Mount Putuo is in the great sea, six hundred li by water southeast of the city of Yin. It is what the *Mahākāruṇika-citta-dhāraṇī-sūtra* calls Mount Potalaka, the palace of Avalokiteśvara. The mountain has Chaoyin Cave; before the cave is a stone bridge. Those who gaze and pay homage sometimes see the Mahāsattva, Sudhana, the pure vase, and kalaviṅkas (and so forth). (The famous mountains under heaven are not limited to these; here we have only taken those cited in the *Treatise on the Prosperity and Decline of the Dharma*.)
