歐陽外傳云。歐子撰新唐書。如高僧玄奘神秀諸傳及正觀為戰士建寺之文。並與削去。司馬君實云。永叔不喜佛。舊唐史有涉其事者必去之。因曰。駕性命道德之空言者。韓文也。泯治亂成敗之實效者。新書也○孝宗御製原道論云。朕觀韓愈原道論。徒文繁而理迂耳（云云）。

The Ouyang Waizhuan states: "When Master Ouyang compiled the Xin Tangshu (New Book of Tang), biographies such as those of the eminent monks Xuanzang and Shenxiu, as well as the text on Emperor Taizong establishing monasteries for soldiers, were all expunged by him." Sima Junshi said: "Yongshu disliked Buddhism; whenever the old Tang history touched upon these matters, he invariably eliminated them." He therefore said: "That which mounted empty words of nature, destiny, and morality was Han's prose; that which obliterated the actual efficacy of order, disorder, success, and failure was the New Book." Emperor Xiaozong's imperial composition Yuan Dao Lun states: "When I look at Han Yu's Yuan Dao Lun, it is merely verbose in phrasing and circuitous in principle." (and so forth).
