On the gengzi day in the eleventh month of the twenty-first year of King Ling of the Zhou, Confucius was born in Zouyi in Lu. In the tenth year of King Jing, Confucius paid court to the Zhou and inquired about rites from Laozi. In the nineteenth year of King Jing, he became the magistrate of Zhongdu in Lu; in the twenty-first year, he became Minister of Works (Sikong); in the twenty-second year, he became Minister of Justice (Da Sikou), executed Shaocheng Mao, and dismantled the fortified walls of the three capitals. Duke Ding of Lu received female musicians from Qi and did not attend to governance for three days; Confucius thereupon went to Wei. In the thirty-sixth year, he returned to Lu from Wei, redacted the Odes, settled the Documents, appended commentary to the Changes of the Zhou, and composed the Spring and Autumn Annals; taking Zeng Shen's filial piety as the subject, he composed the Classic of Filial Piety. In the thirty-ninth year, Duke Ai hunted in the west and captured a qilin; Confucius lamented that the qilin had appeared out of its proper time, and thereupon laid down his brush on the Spring and Autumn Annals. On the yichou day in the fourth month of the forty-first year, Confucius passed away and was buried along the Si River. He had three thousand disciples, of whom seventy-two were thoroughly versed in the Six Arts. In the first year of the Yuanshi era of Emperor Ping of the Han, Confucius was posthumously granted the title Baocheng Xuanni Gong (Duke Xuanni of Exemplary Virtue).
