Emperor Ming of the [Liu] Song: The recluse Gu Huan composed the *Treatise on the Barbarian and the Chinese*, intending to favor Daoism. His fellow companion Yuan Can wrote a treatise to refute it, stating that Confucius and Laozi taught secular matters while the Śākyan clan is world-transcending. Regular Attendant He Zhenzhi also addressed a letter to Huan, stating that the scriptures and records of the Daoist school are shallow and crude.
