7.6

贊曰。世謂徐陵對智者發五願。轉身得出家學道。證法華三昧嗣承祖位。今詳觀願辭。何期心未深。而所獲更勝。殊不知靈鷲同會。咸為得入。故能以自在力用。或現宰官身。或示比丘相。昔徐陵今法華。大權益物隨願出興。豈當以世間仕宦因福受報者比量之耶。此意有權實二義。唯明教者知之。

The appraisal says: The world says that Xu Ling made five vows before Zhiyi, and having changed his life-form was able to leave home, study the Way, realize the Lotus Samādhi, and succeed to the patriarchal throne. Now, examining the text of the vows in detail, how could it be that his intention was not profound yet what he attained was even superior? They simply do not know that at the identical assembly on Vulture Peak, all attained entry. Therefore, by the power and function of sovereignty, they could either manifest the body of an official or display the appearance of a monk. The former Xu Ling and the present Fahua: their great expedients benefited beings, and they arose in accordance with their vows. How could one compare them to those who receive retribution based on the blessings of worldly officialdom? This meaning has two aspects, the provisional and the real; only those who understand the teachings can know it.
