Prince Bai Zhi of Yongyang of the Chen, courtesy name Cezhi, was the eighth son of Emperor Wen. At the beginning of the Zhide era, he went out to serve as Regional Inspector of Dongyang; he invited the Great Master to come to his garrison to deliver lectures, sending letters up to three times. The master then went, and the prince, along with his son Zhan and his family members, received the Bodhisattva Precepts together and conducted themselves as disciples. By day they listened to the lectures, and by night they practiced seated meditation. When the lecture series was about to conclude, the prince was given the Dharma name Jingzhi; he composed a petition, held a great assembly, ordained monks, and cast a statue of the Mahāsattva (Avalokiteśvara). His petition stated: 'May we, life after life and world after world, always form good friendships with the Tiantai Ācārya and the monastic and lay members of the audience, together directing ourselves toward the One Vehicle.' The master said to his disciple Zhiyue: 'I wish to urge the prince to cultivate merit to avert calamity.' Yue said: 'The prefecture's officials are not old acquaintances; they may be fickle and cold.' So he refrained. Afterward, when the prince went on an outing, he fell from his horse and was near death. The master led the assembly in performing the Guanyin repentance ritual for him. Thereupon, he felt slightly revived and sat leaning on an armrest; he saw an Indian monk holding a censer circumambulate him once, the fragrance lingering, and his pain and affliction were instantly relieved.
