Dharma Master Yiwen was a native of Yuhang. He concentrated his mind on Tiantai learning, frequently saying that mere understanding was not enough to realize his aspirations, and therefore eagerly took the cultivation of the various samādhis as his primary task. When he came to study under Baoyun, he fully comprehended his essential teachings. In the third year of the Zhidao era, when Fazhi was propagating the Way at Yanqing, Yiwen's merits in assisting and supporting him were great. Because the monastery buildings were collapsed and ruined, he joined forces with Jueyuan of Danqiu to manage their restoration; in less than three years, all the work was completed. When Fazhi erected the stone of sincere vows to display the regulations for the ten directions, he always joined Master Yiwen's name next to his own, referring to them as 'the Two Masters'. Later, together with Fazhi, he formed an assembly of ten monks to practice a three-year prolonged repentance, vowing to burn their bodies to repay the Buddha's benevolence. At that time, Lord Yang Wen repeatedly sent letters urging them to desist, and in the end the matter was not carried out. The Master lived at Yanqing for forty years, and he never failed to take part in any samādhi cultivated by Fazhi.
