Dharma Master Zejiao was a native of Huangyan in Tai Prefecture. He studied under Fazhi and attained his Way. In the second year of Tiansheng, Huiyin of Zhang'an was newly converted into a lecture monastery, and invited the Master to preside over its seat. Fazhi composed words of transmission for him, which stated in brief: 'I now hand you the incense burner and *ruyi* scepter to serve as tools for transmitting the Dharma. I desire that the fragrant aroma of your threefold training pervade yourself, and that the skillful intentions of the four siddhāntas be suited to those beings. Strive earnestly therein; do not wave or wield them recklessly.'
