Dharma Master Weizhan belonged to the Song clan of Yiwu. His parents encountered an extraordinary monk who said to them, 'You shall bear six sons; the fifth should be allowed to leave home.' Later he entered the Way at Shuanglin and was ordained through imperial favor. He first visited Shenzhao, and not long after went to rely on Guangzhi. He once addressed Zhi, saying, 'What the Great Master has taught, I do not doubt. But as for the purport of the perfectly sudden and absolute, one must realize it oneself.' Later, under Guangzhi's words, he suddenly attained awakening. When he debated with eminent contemporaries, none failed to yield to him in admiration. He first lectured at Chaoguo in Yunjian, broadly spreading the path of transformation. That the Tiantai school flourished in the Three Wu regions began with the master. On the eighth day of the third month in the sixth year of Xining, he established an assembly for the *Golden Light [Sūtra]*. Suddenly he addressed the assembly, saying, 'My karmic conditions of retribution end here.' He then brought up the bequeathed teachings of the *Nirvāṇa [Sūtra]*, earnestly entreating them, sat cross-legged, and passed away. During the cremation, relics sparkled brightly; a stūpa was erected for them at Mount Xiyu. Ruoyuan of Haihui was the foremost of his disciples.
