Dharma Master Ruoshui was a native of Sanqu. Having long relied on Sanxue, he was known for his accomplishments. Desiring to engage in broad inquiries, he changed his name to Ruoshui, outwardly appearing as an unlearned novice while traveling everywhere. At first he dwelt at Chongfu on Mount Tianzhu, lecturing and expounding without weariness. He recited secret mantras with divine efficacy. As the anniversary of the patriarch's death approached, he instructed the cook to prepare bamboo shoots. The cook replied that they were out of season. At dusk, the Master spat bowl-water over the rear garden; during the night, crackling sounds were heard. The next morning, when they went to look, bamboo shoots were densely covering the ground. When the common people reported illnesses, he enchanted water with mantras and gave it to them to drink; those who were healed were beyond count.
