Dharma Master Zimou was of the Lu family of Ninghai and was styled Yuanjing. Having studied long under Zhiyong, he enjoyed great renown in his time. In his later years he presided over Bailian, where disciples crowded like a marketplace. Because provisions were frequently lacking, he intended to dike the sea into fields. He returned home to inform his mother, and his mother gave him a chest of silver, saying, “In undertaking work for the saṅgha, the Buddha will surely take note.” His mother had feared he would not succeed. In the end he completed the labor, obtaining a thousand mu of fields upon which the community relied for sustenance.
