Dharma Master Wenju was of the Zhang clan of Dongyang. Entering Guoqing Monastery to study the path of Tiantai, he mastered all its essentials. His form was like a mountain and his countenance like jade; his movement was like floating clouds, and his stillness like tranquil water. His eyes did not gaze sideways, and his mouth uttered no frivolous speech. In all four dignified deportments, he was an exemplar of monastic discipline. The twofold assembly of Danqiu looked up to him as a model. Earlier, Guoqing Monastery had established the Guangming Bodhimaṇḍa for Emperor Yang, observing it annually; however, people were numerous and food was scarce. The Master made every effort to develop properties, completing twelve qing of estate lands, upon which the assembly relied for sustenance.
