Dharma Master Shanquan was a native of Tiantai. When [the monastery of] Wuxiang petitioned the commandery for an abbot, the Master was nominated on account of his lofty conduct. When he relocated to Jingming, he nominated Cha'an to succeed to his seat. When Cha'an relocated to Chicheng, the assembly nominated Liyun to succeed him. Yun went to Baozang. The surveillance commissioner again deemed Wuxiang too humble [in scale], and since the Master found it insufficient to accommodate the assembly, he moved to another excellent site and expanded the buildings. At the time, it was said that providing a peaceful dwelling for a pure assembly to expound the wondrous teachings and contemplations was something that deserved the mutual support of gods and humans.
