Dharma Master Daobing, surnamed Chen, was a native of Yingchuan. In his youth, he renounced the householder's life to become a disciple of Master Yuan. He comprehensively mastered the scriptures and Vinaya, and was also well-versed in the teachings of Zhuangzi and Laozi. His integrity was solitary and lofty, and his words matched his deeds. He investigated the mindfulness-of-Buddha samādhi incessantly. In the fourteenth year of the Yixi reign era, Wang Qian, the Governor of Yuzhang, entered the mountain to pay his respects and invited the Master to be the leader of the mountain, succeeding to Master Yuan's seat. Because he was the source of the Way and the Dharma successor, the assembly all revered and followed him. In the twelfth year of the Yuanjia reign era, he gathered the assembly to recite the Buddha's name and passed away on his seat. His age was seventy-one.
