Dharma Master Daojing came from the Wang family of Langye. His grandfather, Wang Ningzhi, served as the Regional Inspector of Jiangzhou, so he renounced the householder's life under Master Yuan. At the age of seventeen, he was broadly versed in scriptures and treatises, memorizing ten thousand words a day. He often lamented that it was difficult to maintain the precepts entirely for one's whole life, and vowed to purify the six sense faculties by observing merely a single precept, considering this the key to obtaining deliverance. Master Yuan recognized his firm rectitude and permitted it. He was devoted to reciting the Buddha's name day and night without interruption. When Master Yuan entered nirvāṇa, he entered Mount Ruoye. In the first year of the Yongchu reign era of the Song, he said to the assembly: “My late master summons me; I shall be on my way.” He then sat upright, chanted the Buddha's name, and transformed. The assembly saw a bright light fill the room, which dissipated only after a long while. His age was fifty-two.
